Today’s fast-paced society entails a certain degree of stress in our daily lives.  Whether work place stress or any other type of stress, they will take a toll on both our physical as well as mental health if not properly addressed.  How do we deal with stress in these instances?

 They are several stress management techniques which you might find useful in helping you to cope with stress.  These include:

 Deep Breathing

During the course of our daily lives, we might encounter external stimuli which will invariably induce stress in our body.  We might feel a sudden surge of anxiety which is accompanied with negative emotions, such as anger, frustration.  Our heartbeat will become coarser and faster.  Before reacting negatively to these external stimuli, we can stop whatever activity that we are currently engaging in, gain awareness that you are feeling anxious and stressed and to start doing deep breathing exercise.  Perform several times of deep inhalation and exhalation through our diaphragm will often help us to calm down.  Once calm, we can act and respond to the stimuli in a more rational way.  This will help you in solving the issues at hand better. 

 Time Management

More often than not, a person who can perform multi tasking in today’s society is often praised, and highly regarded.  I think that the advantages of multi tasking are over rated.  A human brain is not the same as computer.  In the face of heavy workloads and commitments, it is best that one can prioritize our schedule.  Instead of jumping into the tasks at hand indiscriminately and end up getting stressed out, it is advisable that one can do some planning and prioritization.  Perform work that is the most pressing and urgent first.  Instead of rigid time management, introduce some level of flexibility into it.  Be prepared to change your course of action if situation warrants it.  This technique will help you in coping with stress.

 Learning to Say No

There is no faster way in getting more stressed out in the work place by being a “yes” man.   Being employee entails us to obey and do the work that is being told to do.  That does not mean that you have to fulfill every single task that is being asked of you.  Assess your coping abilities with the work load.  When things start to get out of hand, it is not a bad idea to learn to say no to more work load.  Saying no does not imply that you are less responsible.  Besides an exercise of your assertiveness, saying no helps you to maintain your sanity as well as your mental and physical well being. 

 Good Night’s Rest

Numerous research have been carried out that show the benefits that a good night’s sleep  has on the overall health and well-being.  When people get less than six to seven hours of sleep each night, they will face a higher risk in developing diseases.  The benefits to having a good night’s sleep include: 1. Maintaining a healthy heart, 2. Stress reduction, 3. Cancer prevention, 4. Losing Weight, 5. Memory booster among others. 

 A person who has a good night’s sleep will feel more energetic and alert as well as less irritable.  He will be less prone to anger when encountering unhappy instances during the course of the day.  A good night’s rest will also aid in curbing the producing of stress hormones which are responsible for promoting higher blood pressures, 

 Physical Exercise

The benefits from having moderate physical exercise during the week can not be overemphasized.  Physical exercises help in keeping you happy and relax.  This is because exercise helps the body in secreting chemicals that will make you feel good and relax.  By engaging in regular exercise, the stress symptoms will be minimized and you will experience a more uplifting mood.  Besides reducing stress, physical exercise helps in adding years to your life, promoting better sleep and sex as well as keeps the disease away. 


Among the good rituals that one can include in daily life, meditation is one of them.  The practice of meditation helps one to become more relaxed, calm and gaining better life perspective.  Allocating certain amount of time daily to meditation routine helps to lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve one’s overall health.  Meditation, the ultimate mental fitness, also helps to alleviate mental problems such as anxiety and depression.

 These are some of the stress management techniques which can be implemented right away.  By implementing these methods into the daily life, our ability to deal with stress will improve dramatically.  With practice over time, various stress symptoms which we experience in the past at frequent interval will reduce and appear at a much lower and acceptable level.
